EIWR Inauguration

The long awaited inauguration of Ethiopian Institute of Water Resources took place on February 15, 2012 at the Eshetu Chole conference hall in the Faculty of Business and Economics campus at Addis Ababa University.  Esteemed guests such as U.S. Science Envoy Professor Gebissa Ejeta,  President of Addis Ababa University Dr. Admasu Tsegaye, Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Connecticut Dr.Mun Young Choi, Senior Vice Provost and Vice President for Research at the University of Connecticut Dr. Suman Singha, His Excellency Donald Booth the U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia, and  the Basin Affairs Advisor Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Ato Shiferaw Jarso were all present and made remarkable speeches at the inauguration.

Approaches to research undertaking

One of the three missions of EIWR is to undertake demand-led, systematically-designed research.  This is done through a two-pronged approach. First, in collaboration with the University of Connecticut and other Universities, we have started to submit grant proposals in order to further the funding possibilities of our research projects. Second, EIWR has involved 18 PhD and 24 MSc students working toward their degrees in our research. When systematically designed and executed, the information generating potential of the team is tremendous. In order to derive the maximum out of this research group, EIWR is guiding the whole exercise through careful topic selection, clustering of researchers, thesis supervision, weekly seminars, and participation in international conferences.

Summer Outreach Program by Undergraduate students

The Ethiopian Institute of Water Resources has started its first summer community engagement program by undergraduate students this year.  The objective of this program was to perform nationally relevant outreach where faculty and students from EIWR’s five partnering universities actively participated in outreach activities that unite educational and research missions with national priorities and needs.
